HP Names Meg Whitman President and CEO

Hewlett-Packard’s board of directors has appointed Meg Whitman as the company’s new president and CEO.

Whitman, the former CEO of eBay, replaces Leo Apotheker, who was ousted after cutting sales forecasts and discontinuing the company’s WebOS tablet and smartphone business. In her first interview as HP’s CEO, Whitman said she plans to follow through with a $10.3 billion purchase of UK software maker Autonomy, an acquisition initiated by Apotheker. The company will also continue to explore the merits of spinning off or selling its personal computing division, she said.

Whitman is credited with building eBay into the world’s largest internet auction house, and has previously worked as an executive for Hasbro, FTD, Stride Rite, Disney, and Proctor and Gamble. Her appointment has been heavily scrutinized by industry analysts, who question whether her background in consumer-oriented companies has properly prepared her to run an enterprise-minded company like HP.

Ray Lane, executive chairman of HP’s board of directors, said in a prepared statement that the company is at a “critical moment” and needs “renewed leadership” to move forward successfully. “Meg Whitman is a technology visionary,” he said, “[She] has the right operational and communication skills and leadership abilities to deliver improved execution and financial performance.”


 

THE TOP 7... Ways to Get by on Less Sleep

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track  

Although most people need about 8 hours of sleep to feel fully rested, most of us don’t come close to getting that much. There’s no substitute for a good long night of rest, but there are a few things you can do to make yourself feel better and more alert when getting more sleep isn’t an option.

  1. Unplug before bed. In the last hour before you go to bed, try to avoid using your computer, your phone, your television, or anything else with a screen. The exposure to light stimulates your brain and decreases the quality of your sleep.

  2. Exercise during the day. Exercise improves circulation, speeds up metabolism, and triggers an energy boost that can last hours. No time to go to the gym on your lunch break? No problem — a brisk walk around the block or a few dashes up a staircase will probably do the trick.

  3. Take a power nap. A 15-minute nap during the day can help you make up for hours of sleep deprivation. A noontime snooze isn’t feasible for everybody, but if you can make it happen, you should. It will help you stay productive for the rest of the day.

  4. Caffeinate. Studies show that 6 ounces of coffee or 8 ounces of tea can heighten alertness for up to six hours. The key is moderation: too much caffeine will keep you from getting good sleep at night, making the next day that much more difficult to get through. Beware of soda and coffee drinks containing sugar — see tip #5.

  5. Avoid junk food. Excess sugar, salt, and fat will only drag you down. Avoid the vending machine and fast food trap by bringing lunches and snacks from home.

  6. Eat protein-rich snacks. Carbs are cheap and convenient, but their quick rate of digestion will leave you sluggish. Trade your candy bars and chips in for yogurt or nuts.

  7. Stay hydrated. Lack of fluids causes your body to go into sleep mode. Drink water throughout the day, rather than sugary sodas or sports drinks.

ECI and Digital Gateway Join Forces. eCommerce Industries (ECI), a provider of business and e-commerce solutions, has acquired Digital Gateway, the Utah-based maker of E-Automate dealer management software. Digital Gateway will become part of ECI’s Office Equipment Division, which includes the OMD and LaCrosse dealer management software products. Jim Phillips, CEO of Digital Gateway, will assume leadership of ECI’s Office Equipment Division. “For years, Digital Gateway and ECI have been battling it out in the office equipment industry,” said Phillips. “I’ve always felt that it brought out the best efforts of both organizations on behalf of the dealers we serve. But there are larger forces at work that threaten our dealer community. We realized that we needed to stop fighting each other and focus our attention on protecting our customers.”

Canon and Oce Launch New Jointly Developed Monochrome and Color Production Printing Systems. Since Canon welcomed Oce into the Canon Group in March 2010, the two companies have steadily worked to enhance their business base. The new monochrome production printer lineup enhances the Canon Group’s overall black-and-white system lineup, better positioning the company to provide solutions that meet the increasingly diverse needs of the market. The new high-speed color multifunction systems build on Canon’s imageRUNNER ADVANCE C9000 PRO series, incorporating Oce’s PRISMAsync controller to support high-volume production for the high speed copying of color documents.

Xerox CiPress, World’s Only High-Speed Waterless Inkjet System, Opens New Revenue Streams with High-Volume Pages. Printing 500 feet or 2,180 full-color pages per minute, the twin-engine device efficiently creates personalized marketing, transpromo, and publishing pieces. Building from its patented solid ink technology, Xerox CiPress 500 enables printing on low-cost plain paper without ink soaking through. This—together with self-monitoring and auto-correcting production controls—results in a workhorse device reliable enough to print tens of millions of pages every month.

Konica Minolta Unveils New Model of Inkjet Textile Printer. The Nassenger Pro 60, a new inkjet textile printer jointly-developed with Digital Graphics Incorporation (DGI), was unveiled in Barcelona at ITMA 2011, the world’s largest textile machinery exhibition. Through this co-development, Konica Minolta aims to enhance its competitiveness in the inkjet textile printing space.
