New Bill Aims to Prevent Discrimination Against the Unemployed

In March, Rep. Hank Johnson (D-Ga.) introduced a bill that would add unemployed people to the list of groups protected under Federal Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws. Current EEO laws prevent employers from discriminating against applicants on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, and national origin.

The Fair Employment Act of 2011 would amend the Civil Rights Act (one of several EEO laws) to prohibit discrimination on the basis of unemployment status. Johnson said he wrote the legislation, which is currently in committee, because he had noticed an increasing number of job ads specifying that a candidate must be currently employed.

“I just thought about how unfair that was, to discriminate against people who had lost their jobs due to no fault of their own, who were just victims of…a tough economy,” Johnson told the Huffington Post. “And then to be penalized for having that status is very unfair. This really affected me, and I decided that there was something that we can do.”

According to Johnson, employment discrimination is difficult for plaintiffs to prove in court. However, he believes the law would prevent employers from using discriminatory language in their employment listings and may improve employment opportunities for the jobless.

THE TOP 7... Tips for New Job Seekers

Tips from the trenches to keep your copier career on track

The job market has started to improve, at least in the copier industry. Hiring is picking up, and employees are actively looking for new jobs. After spending years at the same company, however, a person’s job search skills are liable to get a little rusty. Get back in the game with these seven tips for new job seekers:

  1. Put keywords in your resume. These days, many HR departments use software programs to pre-screen resumes. These programs search for keywords that correspond to the job requirements. If you want to get to the interview stage, you’ve got to get past the software, so make sure to load your resume with relevant keywords. How do you know what those keywords are? A good starting point is the job posting. Parrot the language used in the job description, and you’ll stand a good chance of passing the pre-screen.

  2. Network, network, network. The majority of open positions are never posted publicly. Instead of wasting your time poring over the job boards, spend it networking with old friends, colleagues, and professional acquaintances to get the inside scoop on who’s hiring.

  3. Conduct research before every interview. Companies don’t want to hire people who will take any old job with any old employer. They want to hire people who know something about their company and are eager to work specifically for them. Before you get into that interview, make sure to do your homework.

  4. Accept the beverage. “At the beginning of the interview, if the interviewer asks if you want water, tea, etc., always say yes,” explains Alesia Benedict, CEO of getinterviews.com. “It serves as a great prop if you need to stall a moment and gather your thoughts before responding to a question.”

  5. Double check everything. Make sure your cover letter, resume, and any emails you send are free of errors and misspellings. Spell check is free, but typos could cost you the job.

  6. Send a thank-you note. Taking the time to send a handwritten thank-you note helps you stand out from the crowd and gives you one final chance to make a good impression.

  7. Send your resume to Copier Careers. We’re dedicated to helping match copier industry employers with qualified technicians, copier sales representatives, managers, controllers, dispatchers, support staff, and managed print services experts. Learn more at www.CopierCareers.com.

Green IT Trending Upward as a Priority for Organizations, CompTIA Study Finds. According to a new study released by CompTIA, green IT initiatives will take on added importance in the next few years as more organizations commit financial resources and develop comprehensive strategies. In 2009, only 9 percent of firms rated green IT as a high organizational priority. That figure rose this year to 37 percent, and is expected to rise to 54 percent by 2013. “Given the intense cost-cutting focus during the tough economic times of the past few years as well as periods of high energy costs, it’s likely many firms eyed green strategies as a means to help the bottom line,” said Tim Herbert, vice president of research for CompTIA.

Oce Business Services Opens its Second Document Imaging Center in the U.S. Oce Business Services has opened a new Eastern regional document imaging center. Together with the company’s existing Western U.S. and Philippines-based imaging, coding, and indexing operations, the added location extends Oce’s national and global capabilities. Services provided by Oce document imaging centers include the digitization of hard copy documents, barcode generation and interpretation, and media creation and duplication.

Ricoh Recognized by FTSE4Good Index for Meeting High Standards. Ricoh’s corporate responsibility standards have been recognized for the eighth consecutive year by the FTSE4Good Index. Ricoh’s environmental management approach was rated as ‘Best Practice’. The company was also acknowledged for having 100% of its operations covered by ISO14001-certified environmental management systems. Takashi Nakamura, Ricoh Director and Deputy President, says, “Ricoh’s corporate social responsibility strategy runs deep in our company. It is quite simply the way we do business.”

Xerox CEO Burns got $10.7M pay package last year. Xerox Corp. awarded CEO Ursula Burns a compensation package last year that the company valued at $10.6 million, a 7 percent increase from the year before as Burns assumed the title of chairwoman and orchestrated the printer and copier maker's deeper push into technology services.

SOUND OFF: Our readers speak

In our April newsletter, we asked whether our readers take a lunch break during the workday. The results were enlightening. Almost a full third of the 1007 respondents said they don’t eat lunch at all. Those who do eat lunch usually do so in their service vehicles or at their desks. The final results:

Do you take a lunch break during the workday?

Yes, but I eat at my desk or in my car: 63% (634 votes)
No, I don’t have time to take a lunch break: 30% (305 votes)
Yes, I stop what I’m doing to eat: 7% (68 votes)

Reader comments included the following:

“I haven’t gone to lunch in four years.”

“I have five years of McDonald’s wrappers on the floor of my service vehicle.”

“A lunch break is very important for mental and physical stability on the job, plus it’s the law. I follow up with my employees to make sure they are taking lunch breaks, and I also provide lunch for them every so often.”

“Why wouldn’t you take a lunch break? It’s your life, isn’t it?”

“I learned the hard way that not taking a lunch hurts your productivity and affects your health. I used to have a high metabolism, but skipping lunch for years caused me to gain weight. Now I’m trying to reverse the process by taking my lunch every day. It has helped. Not only am I losing weight, but I’m a much better technician because I’m taking time every day to recharge my batteries.”

“I work as a tech in production print-for-pay and we have a 2-hour response target. Lunch is something that has to be worked into the day, only to be taken if all is quiet. Both our customers and our management look the other way and tell us to do what needs to be done, so the techs work late without overtime pay and give up the luxury of lunches to keep our jobs.”

“I sell for a living, so if I don’t place a box I don’t eat lunch or dinner.”

“I work hard enough the rest of the day. It’s not going to kill you to take 30-45 minutes out of the day to clear your mind.”

“I get paid for eight hours a day from 8 to 5. If the company wants me to work nine hours, they can pay me for it. I usually run errands at lunch.”

“Most dedicated techs I know take their lunch breaks when they can....in between calls. Somedays it may be as little as 15 minutes to others a full hour. My customers come first and I manage to get enough to eat during the day until quitting time.”
